On school reform:

As educators, we are engaged in promoting the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional well being of students as we prepare them to become well rounded, life-long learners, adequately prepared for the workforce of the 21st century. If classroom teachers are at the forefront in our efforts to nurture the next generation of innovators & Nobel winners, we must care about dedicated teachers who struggle, burned-out teachers who still ‘teach’, administrators who have little or no time to mentor, and the drop out rate of good teachers.  With changing family lifestyles, schools must become the place where innovative program options survive on shrinking budgets while addressing a variety of student needs, struggling students excel rather than shuffle through the system, and a team approach to student success drives the pursuit of best practices. In our rush to fill school days with 'must-do's we must be intentional about nurturing 'mindful' and not just 'minds-full' students.

On supporting staff:

Improvement in classroom instruction or on-the-job performance does not begin by sending staff to conferences, or training programs.  The lack of administrative support, follow up, or resources is often cited as the reason for why new learning does not transfer to the workplace. My biggest regret as a busy administrator was that I could not make more time for mentoring and supporting staff. School principals and supervisors may identify with this feeling. Administrative support, and timely follow up is what ultimately determines the success of any initiative.

On today’s students: There is a range of student differences, learning styles, and needs within one classroom requiring teachers to be well equipped and responsive. With busy parents, many working multiple jobs or caring for extended family, and lifestyles that are rapidly changing, teachers are currently experiencing the greatest number of unprepared and un-socialized children in classrooms. This has a direct impact on every other student who arrives ready and willing to learn.

On teachers:
They are often the only constant in  a young child's life, between 8am and 3pm. Besides teaching, they are called on to mother, father, feed, counsel, treat, arbitrate, discipline and love.Teachers do not always have all the tools or the expertise; the needs of their students are many, and they cannot always count on the support of a very busy principal, or colleagues. Several countries are experiencing a rising rate of 'burn-out and quit' rate for new teachers. Strong and compassionate  leadership in classrooms is what will turn things around for the next generation.

On teaching and learning:

There is no teaching without learning. Every student, even a struggling learner, must be challenged to reach for academic excellence. Educators in the 21st century must be finely attuned to the changing dynamics of family life. Classrooms must be places of high engagement, where teachers and students are both engaged as learners, in the process of inquiry and discovery. While ensuring the mastery of skills and content at each grade level teachers must also nurture in their students an attitude of "global-mindedness".  They must demonstrate the virtues of kindness, sensitivity, compassion, and service, as they teach students to respond to the changing needs of a global society, and the environment.

On leadership:

Dynamic & progressive leaders are creative, courageous, and passionate about pursuing and achieving goals. Effective leaders are mission and vision driven; high achievers committed to accountability, and who constantly pursue best practices. They are team players who nurture solution-oriented teams, and recognize that collaborative problem-solving sometimes requires compromise, and unique, risk-taking solutions. Extremely confident, and often highly articulate, they develop enduring relationships with their employees, clients, and community. They take responsibility for the success of the institution, and demonstrate that business is not all about winning, but about doing the job well, and right. They do not just 'manage', they motivate, inspire, and lead. They usually exceed expectations.
